The 2016 Toyota Highlander is a staunch competitor and it can easily win out in a headlight-to-headlight match with rivals like the Kia Sorento.

Seating Options

Many have said that the interior for the Toyota Highlander is one of the best in its class, and they are not wrong. The Highlander offers a roomy and refined cabin that is packed with technology and provides the perfect mixture of space for passengers and cargo. The 2016 Highlander can be configured with either a 20/40/20 split-folding second row bench or plush second row captain's chairs and a side table. Toyota also includes a fold-flat third row on every Highlander model; use the seats to get all of your friends into one car for your next trip or keep them folded into the floor for expanded cargo space for daily use. The Kia Sorento does not offer a third row on the base Sorento L or the standard-engine EX and Limited trims and the third row is only an option on the Sorento LX - you will need to shell out quite a bit of cash to get that third row if you want it. Another point against the Sorento is that it does not offer the option of second row captain's chairs. The first round goes to the 2016 Toyota Highlander.

Cargo Space

The next thing many shoppers look for in a SUV aside from passenger space is cargo space, and the Toyota Highlander knows it. This versatile SUV can fit quite a lot of cargo inside and it is easy to reconfigure; the seats fold flat into the floor for an even load surface and can be put back into place with a single motion. Behind the third row, you have 13.8 cubic feet for cargo, even if you have all of your seats full of passengers (the rear seat is split 50/50, so you can still expand your cargo space with one passenger in the third row). Behind the second row, you will have 42.3 cubic feet of cargo space (the standard second row bench also splits and folds, so there's even more options for your cargo). If you need to haul something really large, the second row can fold down to open up 83.7 cubic feet of cargo space. In comparison, the Kia Sorento only offers 38.8 cubic feet of space behind its second row and has only 73.5 cubic feet for cargo. The Toyota Highlander is much more versatile and can hold much more cargo than the Kia Sorento, so it wins this round as well.

Power and Performance

In the 2016 Highlander, you have a choice of three powertrains that allow you to personalize your driving experience. The standard engine is a 2.7-liter inline four-cylinder engine with 185 horsepower; the available engine is a 3.5-liter V6 that can produce 270 horsepower. In the Highlander Hybrid (available for the Limited trim) you will find an Atkinson Cycle version of the 3.5-liter V6 that produces a hybrid system net 280 horsepower - pretty impressive for an engine that can earn up to 27 city and 28 highway mpg. In the Kia Sorento, you will also find three engines; a standard 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder with 185 horsepower but just 178 pound-feet of torque (versus 184 pound-feet in the Highlander), a 3.3-liter V6 with 290 horsepower, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder that makes 240 horsepower. None of the engines on the Kia Sorento come close to returning the amazing MPG numbers that the Highlander Hybrid is capable of, so even if you want more horsepower, be prepared to shell out more cash at the pump if you go with Kia. Choose the Highlander instead.
